You may have already (mistakenly) labelled yourself as not very talented at learning languages. Many of us here at Voice have ourselves encountered the highs and lows of learning a second language for a particular purpose.
However, new information only goes in, and stays in, when it is learnt actively, of interest to us and compelling enough to be remembered. A debate that is interesting will encourage you to get some speaking practice and improve your active learning skills (the best kind!).
That is why we like to regularly include debates as part of our learning plans...
Below are images from two of the world’s many landfill sites and accompanying questions to frame a debate around these pictures. The goal is to encourage you to exercise your existing vocabulary and grammar knowledge.
Please take a moment to answer the questions in English. Make sure to say your answers out loud in order to to get some speaking and pronunciation practice in – and remember, your answers do not need to be perfect! It is enough to actively try to use your existing vocab and develop your sentence-building skills.
What do you know about landfills?
Why should we keep on using them or how do we stop?
How much rubbish gets dumped into landfills per year?
What are the most toxic things that go into them?
Who are landfills of most danger too – humans, animals or politicians?
Here is a quote from Dan Phillips, founder of construction company, Phoenix Commotion to get your ideas flowing: “I had always suspected that one could build an entire house from what went into the landfill, and, sure enough, it's true.”
We’d love to hear your voice on this debate, so please feel free to send your answers to voiceenglishtuition@gmail.com and we may feature you in part two of this blog.
Until next time!
